![]() ![]() Hopefully, there will be more scenes like this in more anime. This post is a thank-you to the director, Mitsuru Hongo, a veteran who knew how to handle his material and express intentions while also saving some cash for the budget and still make quality scenes. If it had not been there or done wrong, I probably would have hated Outlaw Star. ![]() Even though this series always had a “rush-to-the-finish-line” feel to it, Gene’s dream scene felt quite natural and needed. But it also was the best in characterization of the main character. Most of this episode focused on fighting, probably some of the best hand drawn one-to-one, non-mecha combat ever made. He smiles purely from that someone understood him, someone knew who he was and he was quite glad that it was someone he was attracted to. It is not his usual cocky smile or his threatening grin or his lecherous smirk. The most poignant part is Gene’s sincere smile, the way it flowed from the flashback of him and Melfina together, it came quite wonderfully. I generally refer to Melfina as 'the naked chick in a box'-Hilda, Gene, and Jim opened a briefcase. The timing of the animation and the decisions for the background where this plays out adds to more of who Gene really is and his mental state. Age: 20 Height: 182 cm (5 feet 10 inches). ![]() His brashness is a mask for his doubt, his wants for sex are a cover for his need of understanding and love from another and he fears his dreams because of his indecision. It explains the paradoxes of his behavior. It fully explains what I wondered about Gene’s personality. It is a scene to which I judge all other soul searching moments in anime and any other media. ![]()
